Faculty Variables
The research listed above indicates that the following factors are, generally speaking, important here (although there are some national differences: Teodorescu, 2000):
• prestige of institution
• time allocated for research
• time spent on teaching
• number of graduate students
• number of teaching assistants
• number of colleagues
• support from head of the department
• support from university management
(professors usually publish more than lecturers);
(the higher the prestige of the institution, the higher the production rate); (the more the better); (the less the better); (need some but not too many); (helpful, if they work for you); (some needed, but not too many); (helpful, if not essential); and
(helpful, if not essential).
