Portraying a multicultural society

Chapter 1 highlighted the importance of writing about what you know, with the proviso that you should not limit yourself purely to your own personal experience. Research plays a vital role in providing background information but research alone is unlikely to adequately equip you with the insight required to create characters from social, sexual, religious or ethnic groups of whom you have only a fleeting knowledge.

When you consider that, for some authors, simply attempting to write from the viewpoint of a member of the opposite sex can be extremely daunting, straying into unfamiliar cultures and societies can be a recipe for disaster. This is a highly sensitive aspect of writing, which should be treated with a great deal of respect.
