Swearing And Slang

Whether or not a writer decides to use expletives depends not only on the style and content of the story but also on the author's own sensibilities. You may feel swearing is an integral part of your character's personality and without it, their dialogue would lack realism.

Used sparingly, swear words can add impact and pace to dialogue but gratuitous use of obscenities is offensive and unnecessary. Where a scene is violent or a character is depicted as being extremely angry, upset or frustrated, the occasional expletive will add realism and power to the scene. Too many obscenities will, however, have a diluting effect and the full impact will be lost.
