What are little boysgirls made of

Until relatively recently, most traditional children's fiction depicted boys as the leaders, solving mysteries, forminggangs and generally running the show. Girls were grudgingly allowed to tag along in order to provide refreshments and be rescued whenever necessary.

Any strong-willed girls who understood anything mechanical or were in any way sporty were labelled 'tomboys' and never quite fitted in with the rest of the group. School stories have always been and still are immensely popular but the school featured was invariably the boarding variety and very definitely upper middle class.
