The Indepth Interview

To establish the rapport required for a good interview, begin by having (or cultivating) a genuine interest in the person or subject of your interview. If your interest is nonexistent or minimal, it will show in your voice, in your eyes, in your body language, in the framing of your original questions and certainly in your responses as the interview progresses. If you can bring sincerity and empathy into the interview, you'll be 80 percent there. Sincerity, empathy, and genuine personal interest are the ingredients that promote trust and rapport with the interviewee. And be wise in how you conduct yourself. If you are doing multiple interviews about the same person or topic, word will get around quickly that you are interviewing. If you do poorly, for whatever reason, with the first several interviews, you'll enter subsequent interviews at a distinct disadvantage. If you have been too pushy, judgmental, or insensitive, or if you've spoken ill of the first interviewee to the second...

Tshirtsputting Up A Good Front

T-shirt humor is written from the point of view of adolescents who discover that body language is the next step up from sticking out their tongues to win attention. The humor is mostly in-jokes brazenly poking fun at some local happening a current news event, sports event, or a success story (I survived . . . is the most popular copy legend).

Which Hand and How to Stand

Where you stand and in which hand you hold the laser is an important part of your body language. When you stand to the left of the screen, use the laser in your right hand when you stand to the right of the screen, use the laser in your left hand. If you move as you talk so that you go to the other side of the screen, switch the hand holding the laser so that you do not either put your arm across your body or turn your back to the audience. Be brave. Face them all the time and do it without closing your body off with your arms.

The Sketch Performer

Specialists in slapstick and burlesque humor, these performers are not so much word illusionists as facial contortionists. They convey ideas physically, with a rubber face and exaggerated body language, and squeeze out every drop of the humor through repetition. The sketch performer is an effective actor who can make an audience see a fly buzzing around a soup plate or an old man crossing the street.

Punctuation

When we speak we can help the listener to understand through the use of gestures, facial expressions and body language. We can also use pauses, hesitations and repetitions to add to the force of what we are saying and to make sure that the listener has understood what we are trying to communicate. When we are writing we have to use different mechanisms to do the same work. This is where punctuation comes in. It allows us to divide up our ideas into manageable chunks so that the reader understands what we are trying to say. There are many different rules and conventions regarding punctuation but even following these norms you still have flexibility in the use of a variety of punctuation marks. Many students feel anxious about the use of punctuation in their writing. If you feel this way, it may help to consider punctuation as an aid to enable you, as the writer, to make your writing as clear as possible.
