Revising

Plan to rewrite everything, more than once. Good writing is rewriting, reseeing your first words and determining whether or not they do the job you want them to do. The more drafts you are able to manage, the better your final piece is likely to be. If you've got a week to do a given assignment, start something in writing the first night and see where it goes; plan to reread and return to it as often as time allows. If you compose in longhand, write in pencil, double space, on only one side of lined paper—this lets you add and subtract from your initial draft with a minimum of re-copying, and allows you to cut out and move around whole portions of your text.
