Writing Practice

1. Freewrite for 10 minutes. Write everything you know about death.

2. Freewrite for another 10 minutes. Write everything you know about birth.

3. Choose one line from each freewrite. Use both to initiate an essay. Let these lines be strands in the narrative that you revisit or weave together.

Creative nonfiction offers myriad possibilities for exploring the world around you. You may be more interested in the lives of insects than contemplating warfare. Explore! Write about marsupials or ancient domesticity or the "Barenaked Ladies." Write about yourself. The magic of this form is its ability to connect the everyday existences of disparate individuals to a larger understanding of existence itself.
