When you decide on the story you want to write, it is an absolute necessity to put yourself in the position of your audience, asking yourself, "Will they understand what I'm writing?" "Am I getting my point across?" "Am I being objective?" "Am I too emotionally involved?"
If you're only writing for yourself, forget about writing to sell and write in a journal or a diary. No one is interested in your latest love affair or break up. Write about them in your journal! Your first goal as a professional writer is to entertain your audience. A professional writer takes the personal story and makes it dramatic. So put the screenplay about your recent divorce or latest love affair back in your drawer. Instead write a story that will be a positive experience for you and one which will evoke strong emotional responses from your audience, who will identify with your characters and your story.
