Some people claim they can't wake up entirely until they've had their morning coffee. Others claim they need their morning laugh. As a result, phone companies are offering dial-a-joke services, along with those for sports scores, time, weather, movie reviews, and astrology predictions.
These services need lots of jokes, at least a new one every day. Conservative phone systems shy away from blue, ethnic, and put-down material, but they delight in localized humor. While there are national services that provide dial-a-joke material, and they need writers, too, local writers may get assignments by calling the phone company's ad agency and asking for contact information.
