Does Giving Author Credit to Someone Else Add or Diminish Audience Appreciation When You Retell a Joke

Actually it may help beginners get bigger laughs, unless you do it every time. The audience respects famous comedians and is predisposed to laugh at something attributed to them. It's a fair deal. They get the credit and you get the laughs. When I encourage students in workshops to plunge immediately into active experiments, I use Woody Allen's story of how his father taught him to swim:

My father took me out into the lake on a boat and then just threw me overboard. ... It wasn't half bad once I got out of that sack.
