Clumsy writing may sometimes come from the doubling of prepositions, as shown in the examples below:
^ Incorrect: I cannot comment on the importance of this finding because the topic is outside of my own field.
Correct: I cannot comment on the importance of this finding because the topic is outside my own field.
^ Incorrect: The test mice remained inside of their cages during the entire experimental period.
Correct: The test mice remained inside their cages during the entire experimental period.
"Inside" and "outside" are prepositions, as is "of." Other prepositions often leading to erroneous doubling are "between" (as in "in between"), "except" (as in "except of"), or "above" and "below."
