North American spelling has become more common than British among the majority of the world's English-language users. A glance at the journal you plan to submit an article to will show you which spelling the journal prefers. Which you choose is unimportant as long as you are consistent. A journal will not reject your manuscript because you use British not North American spelling, or vice versa.

Table 4.1 shows some remaining differences in spelling although these are of little concern anymore as word-processing programs easily locate and make the changes for us.
