• Take into account your own ideas, knowledge and experience when you are planning an assignment, but don't expect to use them 'neat' - build on them and stand back from them. Relate them to what you learn from other sources.

• Use 'I' in an academic way if you think it is appropriate.

• Don't use 'I' just to tell your own story but think about your 'university I' as an observer and commentator.

• If you are concerned, check with your tutor about the use of 'I' on their course.

• Remember that university writing never just tells a story (recounts what happened), although this may often be an element in an assignment.

• Take note of how writers establish or suggest what their position is in relation to their material. Don't expect this last point to be always obvious. You may have to search a bit.
